“Music is a composite of inner
visions, sounds and melodies that originate from the depths of the
imagination and resolves leaving a spiritual impression on the
hearts and minds of mankind.” Jesse Powers
Spice Biography
Spice was formed in 1988 when I migrated to Maryland to join the
Volunteers of The United States Army Field from Washington, D. C. I
immediately began to work with such local giants as Marcus Asante,
Shelia Ford, Carlos Johnson, Mickey Fields, Johnny Polite, Charlie
Etzel, Larry Bright, Joe Hosey, Eugene Walker, and many others.
While freelancing in Baltimore and not long on the scene, I met
Johnny Jones, an excellent drummer, from New Jersey. We performed
together with great frequency and became a team. It’s about the
chemistry, right? Now check it out, my brother, Craig Powers, is
also a drummer and we worked together as often as the situation
would lend itself in spite of the fact that we live almost three
hundred miles apart. Talk about all in the family…
Moving on, in 1989, Parris Spivey, a fine guitarist and native of
Buffalo, New York, joined the Volunteers of The United States Army
Field Band as guitarist/vocalist. Of course we had to team-up. This
formed a ménage a trios that is still working together to date.
Other players later became Spice members, like Alan Blackman, piano
player and a native of Virginia Beach, VA. We met on at a jazz gig
at VA beach.
Still moving along, another piano giant named Kirk Kadish, from
Melvindale, Michigan, joined the Spice team. Kirk Kadish came to us
via The U. S. Army Field band too. So, consequently, the tradition
of excellent performances continued.
Next, a fine vocalist named Debbie Poole joined our team and at that
time I can say that Spice really began to sing. She was unique.
Which brings us to up to date. Now singing with Spice is a talent
second to none. Her name is Tracey Curbeam, and we are blessed to
have her work with our team.
I would be remised if I didn’t mention that fact that a “maestro”
named Moe Daniels has also afforded us the pleasure of making
beautiful music with him on board. Our love for his talent is
unflinching.
Spice has been blessed to serve our listeners with our vision,
hearts, talent, and with our music. Thank you all for you love and
support.
Jesse Powers
